Illegal Immigration

I have a few friends and a few acquaintances who are from Mexico. Some are illegal immigrants and they are here to work.  I know because I used to work with them and damn, they work hard.  I learned a lot in talking with them and, my past opinions of them have changed because of our illuminating conversations.  Here’s what I’ve learned.

Usually, their plan is to take what they make here and eventually go home. This is a way of life, a paradigm into which they are born. For example, we grow up and our options are, we can go to college, we can jump into the work force, we can….anything. Over there the options are, go to university, jump into the work force, go North. Now, why go to the United States? Simply put, the potential to earn a decent wage in Mexico is minimal so, if you have a family to support and dreams of giving them better, you leave them and go to a place where you can work your ass off, save a substantial amount of money, send some home and give your family better. But, why sneak across? Why not get permission first and come across legally? Quite frankly, the answer is, sneaking is easier and takes less time. It’s dangerous, yes, but, while you are waiting for that next chance to apply for your visa, after being turned down…for what, the 3rd time, you could be in the U.S. making money. I am going to research what exactly are the steps for acquiring a visa and I will let you know what I find out. But, until then, I have more to say…surprised? Those of you who know me aren’t.  Hehehe…anyway….

So, what’s my problem? My problem is that, while I understand they are breaking the law, while here illegal immigrants are working and contributing to our country. Here’s the part that gets heated. Many say that illegal immigrants are taking all our resources so that we can’t use them. For example, just recently, I applied for food stamps and was turned down because I make $100.00 too much. I’m a single mom raising 3 girls and paying child support for a 4th little girl. Did I get turned down because there’s just no money left? Is there no money left because an illegal immigrant has applied for aid and been approved? See…I don’t believe that is the issue. But, this is where I need to do the more research. I need to find out what the statistics really are. I mean, every one of the illegal immigrants I’ve come across work.  How do I know, because that’s how I met them, back when I served tables.  When you stop to talk to your coworkers, you learn a lot.  Some of these people have two, sometimes three jobs and, put together, they make great money. I’m sure there are illegals using our system to get food stamps, etc., but, before I get the old, they shouldn’t even be getting food stamps, they aren’t even from here…please keep in mind, they are the ones cooking your food when you go out to eat. They are the ones making the beds and cleaning the toilets in that hotel room you just checked out of. They are the ones doing all the menial tasks that we as U.S. citizens look down on. If we’re so ready to use their services and pay them lower wages, why shouldn’t they be allowed to get help. As for the work they do, seriously, are you going to apply to work in that hot kitchen and cook for eight, 10, 12 hours at a time? Are you going to go out to the fields and pick the oranges? Maybe if the employers paid more money? Yeah, right, so then our cost of living goes up because now we have to pay more for our lettuce, more for our clothing, more for everything. What sickens me is how so many will look down on illegals yet, they still go out to eat and they still travel. As for taxes, many illegals actually do have taxes taken out of their checks. While a few do their taxes at the end of the year, a great many don’t. Where does that money go? Does anyone know? And, about terrorists coming in, what about our own terrorists right here within our borders? We can’t keep blaming illegals for crime rates and terrorist actions unless we take credit for that which we ourselves are guilty of. Yes, there are bad apples, but they are a universal issue.
It’s my sense that, while we keep hearing our government talk about making the borders stronger, illegals are getting across because we need them. The borders are not being protected as strongly as possible because our government realizes that the moment we kick them all out, we are screwed. And I’m not just referring to Mexicans. I’m talking about all our illegals that come in from worldwide. Yes, this is a new and more dangerous age and with illegals who are here to legitimately work, there are terrorists who can potentially use the same ways in. I think an answer to the problem may be this…let’s make it easier for immigrants to get visas. Let’s give them amnesty and acknowledge that while these people are here, our economy is better. Let’s make it so they don’t have to be so sneaky and let’s give credit where it is due. Then, we would be better able to guard against terrorists, because we’d be better able to monitor who is coming and going. We wouldn’t have to worry so much that our social security numbers are being used by Juan and Jose from down in Tacamboro. For that aid that we say we don’t have enough of….I still want to know, where the hell is the money going that comes out of their checks? Couldn’t that be used?
When you feel the need to talk down about illegals, remember how good that steak was last night when you and the Missus went out to eat. When you traveled last, how clean was that bathroom and were the beds made to your liking? Do you like orange juice with your eggs and bacon and do you like driving to work through an area that has been picked up and maintained? Maybe you have good work ethic and would be willing to do what it takes, but, do we have enough people in our country like you? Folks, we’re a spoiled country…let’s stop being so sanctimonious and acknowledge that busboy who cleaned up after you so you wouldn’t have to. And let’s respect that they are only seeking what any of us would, a better life. Yes, there needs to be great change made in their own country so that they can stay there and have a good life. But, this kind of change will take much time and effort and in the meantime, they still have families to support. We here need to learn the value of hard work again.  I love this country for what it stood for but, I question whether we remember why we came to be in the first place.  We take much for granted.  We could learn alot from these immigrants.  Maybe we could stop judging and start facing our issues together.

Re-Visit…

i want to revisit something while i’m too sick to sleep and probably delirious from this damn fever…but, what i have to say doesn’t stem from delirium…i really, really believe this…in my last blog i called for us to focus our energies…i want to explain further…(before you continue…please put away your thoughts of, “i’ve heard all this before”, please don’t roll your eyes and please, open your mind…you may have heard it…we all have but, are we applying it or, have we written it off as new age nonsense…and how new age is it really?  look back thru history at all our holy teachers…they were talkin this kind of craziness…)

you ever notice how you’re attitude can either make or break your day?  do you ever observe how, one person walking into a room can either bring the energy level up or lower it simply by his or her mind-set?  if you are not on your toes and “awake”, you are as easily susceptible as the next guy…i’ve seen this first hand…from my last position where i witnessed an entire company’s morale slowly and steadily take a downfall… (disclaimer: this is not another dig by me towards that place, it’s simply me taking from what i’ve seen and learning from it).  the same was the case many years ago when i served in the military…i worked at the adjutant general’s office in the department of military affairs, i was basically a file clerk in this, the up high echelon of the military…there was such hatefulness that it actually took form…not in the visible sense but, you could feel it…i would take the elevator up and as soon as the doors opened i was hit by a wave of it…every day…when i left that place, i actually had to detox…same as what i’m going thru now having left my last position…i do not exaggerate…

so, today i work in a place where the owner is striving to create something positive…he hired a company to come in a teach us customer service…one of those courses that speak of personal accountability and the way we listen…whether we are present, etc….it occurs to me that, i’ve not been present for a good part of my life and further, it occurs to me that, for all the judging i’ve done on this blog, i’m at least a bit responsible for the state of my last place of employment…when i was there, how much did i contribute to making change?  when the opportunity arose to speak up, did i take it?  or was i too afraid of what others might think?  i must admit, i did a lot of trash talking behind the backs of those in authority…i know that perhaps had i spoken up, i probably would have been let go…seems that this management force does not look kindly upon those wanting to effect change…but, should that have stopped me?  what if, instead of speaking out against what was and is wrong with that place, i had conducted myself more with a positive attitude…even in the face of all the negativity…what if i, despite the snideness i might have received, turned a calm face and a  heart filled with goodwill towards those who incessantly felt the need to complain day in and day out…certainly this would have been an effort on my part but it is my belief that positive energy is ultimately a stronger force because in it’s nonviolent, nonjudgmental approach it eventually wears down the negative…negativity will eat at a person’s morale…it takes much energy to harbor hatefulness…it takes work to feed a grudge, how much work does it take to look at this fellow angry human being as a confused and sad person?  it simply takes a moment to step away and rethink…put that person in your mind’s eye and imagine he or she as a child…something happened to program in that person a tendency to be angry or upset…this person does not have the wherewithal (yet) to see this in themselves…but, if you do then, without speaking aloud of your image…behave towards that person with compassion and understanding, even in the face of ugliness that may invariably be thrown back at you…

dear god, how much rambling can a person who’s just run out of nyquil do?  my white blood cells are going ballistic in the war against this common cold who is trying, albeit in vain, to control my body and render me a sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching…wait…isn’t that from the nyquil commercial?  wow…is my desire to drink this disgusting alcoholic beverage disguised as medicine that strong?  it’s like yager meister for god’s sake!  oh, there’s another memory…take a shot of yager meister and drop it in a mug of beer…then, tip your head back and drink it down…whoever invented that concoction is truly, truly sick and demented…

back, must get back and finish my fevered thoughts so that i may once again attempt to sleep and let my poor body rest…

long rambling session short…take my lessons learned from my day to day and then, expand…apply it to your town, your state, your country…the world…no, i’m being serious…i believe these tragedies that are rampantly happening in our world stem from the way we perceive and approach one another….think about it…the analogy of the pond in which we throw a stone and watch as the ripples go outward, this analogy has merit…consider the energy field we live in, the vibrations of this planet…consider your very thoughts as though a pebble to be thrown into the collective energy field/pond…each and everyone of us is accountable…try this on…your pebble/thought may seem inconsequential until you look out and notice how big and far that ripple will reach…all the way to the other side of the pond…hmmm…what you give off here in your little ol’ town may be the energy felt on the other side of the world…it may be the one thing that decides whether the china man smiles at his child who has spilled her milk or for his face to frown at her and a harsh word to leave his lips…not to say that we are just ignorant pawns to one another’s thoughts…simply if we don’t catch ourselves, if we don’t wake up…we can unknowingly be effected…we must take “action” as opposed to “reaction”.

so, tomorrow…aack, later this morning i’m going to open my blog and see what kind of craziness i’ve spouted…i ask your understanding…forgive me my soapbox routine…yes, i am aware i do enjoy the sound of my own voice…this is not to say that what i write/speak of should be thrown out…i’m sad that i see day to day pain and strife in a world filled with human beings who within themselves have the power to make a change…just with a thought….imagine if we could all gather and focus together that thought…indeed that mountain would move…

We Won’t Even Be Missed

She looked at me and her eyes said,
“I give myself to you, all of me.
All I ask is your respect.
But, even this is too much to ask from you,
the human race.”
And I looked at her, at her beauty,
this Mother of all things.
My head bowed in shame to the truth
of what her eyes said.
But, I also felt a respect because I knew
that when all was said and done,
Mother Earth, though scarred and damaged,
Would Prevail,
while our dust was blown by the winds that would come,
followed by the rains that would erase our footprints.
And we won’t even be missed.

What If…

What if…

challenge to the paradigms

...clocks did not exist?

…we respected Nature to such an extent that it was never questioned we do what was best for Her, in Her interests, not our own?

…we treated everyone like family?

…all weapons rusted one day and we couldn’t create any more because all our tools were rusted too?

…Columbus had believed the world was flat?

…we used our entire brain?

…people we think are abnormal because they’re talking to themselves really are talking to someone and we’re the abnormal ones because we don’t see the other person?

…goverments of the world could get the phrase “use your words” as easily as my three year old does when I catch her about to smack her sister in anger?

…the phrase, “think not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”, was actually taken to heart?

…people stopped getting mad and started offering solutions to what they chose to make a problem?

…people realized that having problems or not are really the product of a choice?

…people realized that, like a ripple in a pond, even one individual can effect an entire world?

…fairies really do exist and angels really are all around us?

…we trusted one another?

…the fate of Mother Earth really does depend on us?

Indigenous people worldwide have the belief that Mother Earth is a sentient being. What if they’re right?
